For more complex concepts, students need to make connections and form associations through reprocessing activities. In other words, for meaning to be attached to learning, students must make personal connections to their prior learning.

The more senses are used in these reprocessing activities, the better things stick in our memory.
Guided practice
Guided practice should always come before independent practice. If something is incorrectly presented and practiced, it is practically impossible to "unlearn." Practice makes permanent.
Coverage vs. proficiency
Teachers can cover new material so students understand it, but students can't remember it without adequate and correct practice.
