I was reminded of one of my favorite travel stories recently when my friends said they were planning a trip to Spain. This adventure took place in Granada, Spain when I was preparing to lead a trip for high school students. I was scoping out this epic walk to a lookout point of the Alhambra at night. I can't even describe how incredible it was! I navigated my way up a cobblestone neighborhood that ended at a lookout spot called "El Mirador de San Nicolas." With each turn I took (actually on my way down) I snapped pictures to find my landmarks and repeat the route.
Later, I had the opportunity to lead my group on this walk from where we were staying. It turned out to be a much longer walk from our hotel than expected, but still totally worth it.
I HIGHLY recommend trekking up to this lookout spot at night and then touring the Alhambra in the daytime. There is a lot of history in this town! And the once palace and fortress, the Alhambra, is remarkable!
A few details about the Alhambra:
- Moorish architecture that was completed towards the end of Muslim rule of Spain (1391)
- it was the last standing fortress that was eventually taken over by the Spanish during the Reconquista (1492)
- After this (in 1492) it was the site where the Italian explorer, Christopher Columbus (Cristóbal Colón en español) received royal endorsement from Ferdinand II and Isabella I to go explore
