The Recipe for Success: 8 of 10

How to create an optimal environment for language learning

(8) Processing Time

Processing time is crucial.

No one can learn if they don’t have time to process. We need internal time to create meaning for ourselves. Meaning is generated from within, not from external sources.

Moving immediately from one piece of learning to the next almost guarantees that little will be learned.

How much processing time is needed depends on the difficulty of the material and the background of the person learning it.

*The amount of processing time needed varies with each person and is not related to intelligence.

After providing wait time…

- call on students randomly (do not call exclusively on volunteers), keep an element of surprise

- provide help: if a student cannot respond, ask another student (or have that student pick someone), then go immediately back to the first student (once someone responds correctly)

- think-pair-share
