How to create an optimal environment for language learning
(2) Patterns
Our brains organize information into meaningful patterns. Therefore, in order to have an easier time remembering new material, students should chunk, sort, and order words in meaningful ways.
Working memory:
Our brains can hold onto about 7 pieces of information at a time.
Chunking
Chunking information into discernible patterns allows us to deal with a few large blocks of information. When 2 or more ideas are connected this way, the info becomes meaningful and easier to remember. *There is an additional benefit to memory if students chunk vocab according to their own desires.
e.j. jugar a las cartas, tocar la guitarra vs. jugar, tocar, las cartas, la guitarra
Sorting
Students will remember a vocabulary list much better when they organize the words into groups that they select.
Ordering
Put new words and expressions into an order that is meaningful to you.
Ideas could include ordering words from:
- biggest to smallest
- best to worst
- most important to least important
- 1st to last thing to do on a typical day
- oldest to youngest
- most to least interesting
